Colleyville PD Launches “Stop Thief” Program
Full Description:
Colleyville police are enlisting residents to send a message to criminals that the city is “not open for business.” The department has initiated the “Stop Thief” program to deter car burglaries. The new program, which begins this week, works as both a crime deterrent and a public education program. It is the first of its kind in Texas.
“Vehicle burglaries are crimes of opportunity. If citizens can send a message to thieves that the opportunity isn’t present, those thieves will likely move on to another target,” stated Colleyville Police Chief Tommy Ingram.
“The program also serves to educate and remind the public to remove valuables from their cars, which is a critical concern in stopping this particular crime.”
The “Stop Thief” program is simple, consisting of a printed placard that is placed on the car’s rearview mirror each time it is parked. The placard serves as a notice to potential thieves that there are no valuables in the car; it also serves as a reminder to vehicle owners to remove any valuables, including bags, purses, briefcases, money, laptops, radar detectors, etc. The placards are free and can be obtained at the Colleyville Justice Center, 5201 Riverwalk Drive , in Colleyville.
The crime rate in Colleyville is one of the lowest in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and the lowest in Northeast Tarrant County. Vehicle burglaries are one of the most common calls received by the Colleyville Police Department.
